Lieutenant Gomenko’s mobile rang. He pulled it out of his pocket, looked at it, then juggled it to his ear.
\nHe swivelled around in his chair.
\n\u201cI am,\u201d he said, looking out the office window.
\nHe listened some more.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re not looking the best,\u201d he said.
\nOutside, pigeons had stopped on the stonework and were looking around like they were lost.
\n\u201cThat didn\u2019t help,\u201d Gomenko said.
\nOne pigeon flew off.
\n\u201cThat would be putting it mildly,\u201d he said.
\nThen the whole flock of them took off.
\n\u201cAnd what offer would that be?\u201d
\nGomenko’s eyes followed some back-to-front scene inside his head until they could follow no more.
\n\u201cUnderstood,\u201d he said, and pushed End Call.
