Zdravko leaned one arm over the rail to scan the dance floor below for Rusim. Rusim was never that hard to find. He danced so bad it was good, especially if he smoked a cigarette. Not everyone could get the idea of dancing badly. They preferred to be young, dress sharp and have all their hair. And cigarettes probably weren\u2019t allowed no more. Amidst that sea of bodies dancing in time, Rusim was with some girl who was looking pretty good. Zdravko returned to the conversation and Georgieva.
\n\u201cI fell asleep today,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the forest.\u201d
\nThere was no obvious reaction. A cop with a bad mind wasn\u2019t any more admirable than a cop with a good mind. Georgieva had pinball eyes and a suit to match. Her frizzy black hair was the kind that was practically unmanageable. She must have looked at herself every morning and thought: \u201cOK. Fuck it. I\u2019ll just tie it up again.\u201d
\nAt the end of the table Petrov seemed in a particularly good mood. \u201cYou need a rest,\u201d he said. \u201cYou look all worn out from your holiday.\u201d Petrov was dressed like mafia central. Leather jacket, next generation T shirt, religious bling, and shoes made from the blood of halfway honest, in-debt citizens.
\n\u201cYou have something to tell me.\u201d Zdravko kept his focus on Georgieva.
\n\u201cWe have a line on the guard.\u201d
\n\u201cGood.\u201d
\n\u201cWant to come along?\u201d
\n\u201cWhy not?\u201d
\n\u201cYour Gjoeb must be one stupid motherfucker,\u201d put in Petrov.
\n\u201cI hope so,\u201d said Zdravko looking directly at Georgieva.
\n\u201cThe Grand Hotel,\u201d Georgieva said.
\nPetrov stood up, peering over the dance floor.
\n\u201cSit down Trendafil,\u201d said Georgieva.
\nPetrov sat down.
\n\u201cWe were lucky,\u201d said Georgieva, her demeanour unmoved. \u201cOne of the other guards at Pazardjik had a few stories to tell. One thing led to another.\u201d A fleeting wistfulness passed across her lips and eyes. Then it was gone.
